Power consumption is very low and if you switch off, the channel and competition settings will be lost and will have to be re-entered when you switch on again. INTRODUCTION The timer can be used manually, or automatically with one or two infra-red gates. A gate memory allows correct timing even if the start or finish gate is not switched on when the competitor passes. The timer is for use with wire-free gates. A menu system allows the channel of the built-in receiver to be changed. Buttons on the timer start the warm-up or countdown timer. An explanation of all the controls is given overleaf. CHARGING The timer has a built in battery, which should be recharged when the heads are recharged. We recommend charging for 24 hours before and after each use and every 3 months if not in use. You cannot overcharge. If the timer battery becomes discharged, the display will flash a 'lo bat' message. You should either plug in the charger or connect to an external 12 volt battery with the lead provided. If a head battery becomes discharged, the 'batt' lamps on the head and the timer will flash (you can still use it by connecting a 12 volt battery using the battery lead supplied for the timer). OPERATION Switch on the timer and set up gates as described below. Press zero, then switch the gate selector to start (left) as the competitor approaches the start line. Switch to off (centre) when the timer has started. Switch to finish (right) as the competitor approaches the finish line. GATES Attach the heads and reflectors to the tripods and position at each side of the start and finish lines (the head and reflector must be between 5 and 30 metres apart). Tighten the leg-locking nuts to ensure that the tripods are firm and point the reflector towards the head. Switch the head to 'CH1 S' for the start gate, or to 'CH1 F' for the finish gate. The 'batt' lamp should light - if not, or if the lamp flashes, the head needs charging (you can still use it by connecting a 12 volt battery using the battery lead supplied for the timer). Align the head with the reflector - the 'beam' lamp will go out to show correct alignment. Tighten all the screws and carefully recheck that the head is still aligned. NOTE that any delay you may notice in the start or finish signal to the timer (due to radio reception delays) is cancelled-out by special circuitry in the receiver to ensure perfect timing accuracy. A single gate can be used for start and finish, in which case only the start gate 'beam' lamp on the timer the will operate, but the gate selector switch is used as if there were two gates. If there is difficulty in aligning, ensure reflector and head lenses are clean and dry. Place head and reflector closer together. Although separation may be up to 30 metres, heavy rain may impair operation and the distance should be reduced to 20 metres or so. Standing in front of the beam, close to the head, may not appear to interrupt it - this is normal since at close range the beam responds to movement, and should operate correctly in actual use. TWO PHASE Normally, three gates are used in the ring. Set the head at the start of phase one to 'Ch 1 S'. Set the head at the finish of phase one/start of phase two to 'Ch 2 S'. Set the head at the finish of phase two to 'Ch 2 F'. On the timer, set 'CH:' to '2-gn', and set 2P: to 'on' (the finish 'Fault' lamp may come on when waiting for the competitor to start - this is normal). It is possible to use only two gates by combining the start of phase one and the start of phase two. In this case, set the head at the start of phase one to 'Ch 1 S' and the head at the finish of phase two to 'Ch 1 F'. Set the 'Gate channel' on the timer to '1'. Press the 'F' button if there are faults in phase 1 - the phase 1 time is then displayed. During phase 2, press the 'recall' button to temporarily show the phase 1 time. WARNING Although the heads are designed for outdoor use, the timer is not, and must not get wet. If necessary protect it with a polythene bag. The charger must not be used outdoors, or in damp conditions. CONTROLS Start and Stop These buttons can be used at any time for manual operation. Zero Sets the timer to zero. Operates only if the timer is stopped. With automatic timing it is not necessary to zero the timer since this is done automatically when the start gate operates. Holding the button down for about four seconds tests the display, which will then alternate between 888.888 and blank. Gate Switch This has three positions. Pressing the switch to the left enables the start gate and lights a red warning lamp. The centre position disables both the start and finish gates. Pressing the switch to the right enables the finish gate and lights another red warning lamp. 'Beam' Lamps The red 'beam' lamps go out to show that the gates are aligned, and come on when the beam is interrupted. During single gate operation the finish beam lamp remains on continuously. Memory/Recall The timer is designed to give a correct time even if a competitor passes the start or finish with the gate accidentally switched off. In these circumstances a buzzer will sound for 5 seconds. If, during this time, the memory/recall button is pressed, the timer will start from the time the start gate was passed, or will display the time when the finish gate was passed, as appropriate. If this is not required, do nothing - at the end of the 5 seconds the buzzer will stop. This memory facility may be switched off if not required. Pressing this button when the buzzer is not sounding will display the previous competitors time, or the phase 1 time. Current timing and the public display are not affected by this. 45 s Pressing this button will start the 45 second countdown timer. When the countdown ends, timing will start (competitor is deemed to have started). F Pressing this button halts phase 2 of a two-phase competition and displays the time for phase 1 (used when there are faults in phase 1). SET (menu) Hold down this button whilst using the menu. There are 4 items - press 'Fn' to go from item to item: di: this shows if the public display is on or off. Press '-' to switch off, press '+' to switch on. CH: this shows the wire-free channel. Press '-' or '+' to cycle through the four channels. [the available channels are: 1; 2-gn (green); 2-bL (black); 2-gy (grey)] 2P: this shows if two phase timing is on or off. Press '-' to switch off, press '+' to switch on. gt: this shows if the gate memory is on or off. Press '-' to switch off, press '+' to switch on. Menu selections are lost if the timer is switched off. 'Fault' lamps These light if there is no radio signal from the gate. If either lamp flashes either you are trying to use two heads switched to the same gate position on the same channel, or there is interference so severe as to affect timing. Try the other channel. 'Batt' lamps These flash if the head batteries are within a couple of hours of exhaustion. Buzzer The buzzer sounds a short warning whenever one of the buttons is pressed and performs a function (but not, for example, if the stop button is pressed with the timer stopped). A longer note sounds note whenever the active gate beam is broken. A 5 second note sounds during the gate memory period. A tick sounds whenever the timer is running. The buzzer has a volume control. CONNECTIONS At the back of the timer are sockets for a 12 volt battery, charger/mains adapter, public display, and computer. PROBLEMS Cannot align head: Ensure reflector and head lenses are clean and dry. Place head and reflector closer together (this may be necessary in heavy rain). 'Fault' lamp lit: Ensure head is switched to correct channel AND that the beam is aligned. Ensure head is not too far from timer (200 metres max in normal conditions). 'Fault' lamp flashes: Ensure no two heads have the same switch position. Switch heads and receiver to the other channel. 'Batt' lamp flashes: Head batteries are low but you may have a couple of hours use. 'lo bat' on display: Timer batteries are low but you may have a couple of hours use. CHANNEL CODING Three different channel codes are available for heads (green, black and grey), as indicated by the colour of the channel switching knob on the head. Green coding is supplied unless otherwise specified at the time of ordering. The different codes apply ONLY to channel 2. Channel 1 is the same for all sets. The timer can be switched to all channels by using the menu as described above. timing C700 timer Instructions Redesdale Limited 29 Clarendon Road London W5 1AA tel/fax: 020 8810 6908 email: eg@egtiming.co.uk EMBED MSDraw.1.01 Registered in England and Wales number 4472738.
