Six timing modes, for various sports, are provided. A printout option is available and instructions marked '*' apply only if a printer is fitted. An explanation of all the controls is given overleaf. If the more advanced functions are not required it is not necessary to understand how they work in order to use the basic timing facility. TIMING MODES The selected timing mode is indicated by the two left hand characters of the timer display, as follows: SJ: Show Jumping timing with gate memory facility. Sn: Show jumping timing without memory (useful for indoor timing). cc: Cross county timing with 'display freeze' for timing several competitors. At: Athletics timing. ru: Marathon timing. cd: Countdown timing, from preset time. The first two modes time in seconds and hundredths, the next two in minutes, seconds and hundredths, the last two in hours, minutes and seconds. To change mode; hold down the 'set' button and press the 'faults' button until the required mode is indicated. PRESET TIME In Show Jumping modes the preset time is the 'allowed time' used for automatic time fault calculation. In countdown mode, the preset time is the time counting starts from when the timer is set to zero. In marathon mode the displayed time can be set to allow synchronisation. The preset time is entered by holding down the 'set' button. Then, each press of the 'recall' button then advances the time by one second. Holding the 'recall' button down advances the seconds at a faster rate. Similarly, the 'memory' button advances the minutes and hours. Pressing the 'zero' button clears the preset time in case of error. SIMULTANEOUS The timer is started and then runs continuously. Each time a gate is passed the display will 'freeze' TIMING for 5 seconds, allowing the exact time of passing to be written down. The 'freeze' can be extended or (Cross Country Mode) operated manually by holding down the 'memory' button. The 'freeze' can be ended (if two competitors approach in quick succession) by pressing and releasing the 'memory' button. For simultaneous timing of several competitors, record the time each competitor passes the start and finish lines and subtract the figures to find the actual course time for that competitor. A prepared record sheet with columns for competitor number and times will enable this to be done more easily. GATES Attach heads and reflectors to tripods and set at each side of start and finish lines (max. distance of head from reflector is 30 metres, min. is 5 metres). Push tripods into ground slightly, tighten leg locking-nuts to ensure that tripods are firm and point the reflector towards the head. Connect heads to gate sockets on timer. The red lamps on the heads light up to show that they are connected. Loosen head screws and align the head with the reflector - the red lamp will go out to show correct alignment. Tighten all the screws and check the head is still aligned. The head must be carefully aligned - reflector position is not critical. A single gate can be used for start and finish. In this case plug it into the start socket on the timer. Only the start gate 'beam' lamp will operate, but the gate selector switches are used as if there were two gates. NOTE - If there is difficulty in aligning, ensure reflector and head lenses are clean and dry. Place head and reflector closer together. Although separation may be up to 30 metres, heavy rain may impair operation and the distance should be reduced to 20 metres or less. Standing in front of the beam, close to the head, may not appear to interrupt it - this is normal since at close range the beam responds to movement, and should operate correctly in actual use. PRINTER * With the printer switched on, printing will begin each time the timer is zeroed, or started by the start gate, and the timer display will request the competitor number (by showing "no:" at the left). Key in the competitor number (using 'clear' to make corrections) AND PRESS 'ENTER'. The timer display will then return to normal. To remove the printed slip, fold towards you over the black cover, and tear sharply. NOTE - normal timing will continue when the printer is running and when the competitor number is being entered - in case of confusion the printer should be switched off. WARNING External battery must not exceed 14 volts. Although the heads are designed for outdoor use, the timer is not, and must not get wet. If necessary protect it with a polythene bag. CONTROLS ON This switches the timer on and off. Switching off cancels the selected mode and preset time. DIGITS This is set to suit 5 digit or 6 digit public displays. DISP. ON This controls the public display. SET (yellow) This may be pressed at any time to show the preset time. Current timing and the public display are not affected. This button is also held down during mode and time setting, as described above. MEMORY (orange) In the first Show Jumping mode the timer will give the correct time even if a competitor passes the start or finish with the gate accidentally switched off. If this happens a buzzer will sound for 5 seconds. If, in this time, the memory button is pressed, the timer will start or stop at the time the gate was passed. If this is not required, do nothing - at the end of the 5 seconds the buzzer will stop. In cross country mode, each time a gate is passed, the display will 'freeze' and buzzer sound for 5 seconds to allow the time to be recorded. If the memory button is pressed during this time the 'freeze' will continue until the button is released. Pressing the button at any other time will 'freeze' the display until the button is released. RECALL (blue) This can be pressed at any time to show the previous competitor's time. Current timing and the public display are not affected by this. FAULTS (black) In Show Jumping modes, if the 'allowed time' has been set (see over), pressing this button shows the number of seconds the current competitor has exceeded the allowed time. Current timing and the public display are not affected by this. ZERO Sets the timer to zero (or to the preset time in countdown mode). Operates only if the timer is stopped. With automatic timing it is not necessary to zero the timer since this is done automatically when the start gate operates. If pressed with the 'set' button held down, the preset time is cleared. START and STOP These buttons can be used at any time for manual operation. GATE SWITCHES Pressing either switch down switches on the appropriate gate and lights the red 'set' warning lamp. Pressing either switch up, switches off the gate and warning lamp. The start gate always sets the timer to zero before starting. Each gate is automatically switched off after the beam has been broken, and both gates are switched off when start, stop, or zero are pressed. BEAM LAMPS The red 'beam' lamps go out to show that the gates are aligned, and come on when the beam is interrupted. During single gate operation the finish beam lamp remains on continuously. VOLUME Controls the volume of the warning buzzer and 'tick'. The warning buzzer sounds whenever one of the buttons is pressed and performs a function (but not, for example, if the stop button is pressed with the timer stopped). The buzzer sounds a longer note whenever the active gate beam is broken. A 5 second note sounds during the gate memory and display 'freeze' periods. A tick sounds whenever the timer is running. BELL SOCKET (rear of timer). This controls an external bell which can sound as follows: (if fitted) SJ mode - the bell will sound after 60 seconds for 'Top Score' events. Sn mode - the bell will sound after 45 seconds for 'Top Score' events. cd mode - the bell will sound when the timer counts down to zero. PRINT * This controls the printer, which may be switched off at any time it becomes confusing. PAPER * This feeds blank paper when the printer is on. KEYPAD * This is used to key in the competitor number when the timer display shows "no" at the left. 'Clear' cancels the number for correction. PRESS 'ENTER' when the number is correct. PAPER CHANGE * To remove old paper, use paper feed button - DO NOT try to pull paper out backwards. Insert square cut edge of new paper into paper inlet at rear and push whilst pressing paper feed button (with printer switched on). USE ONLY correct paper roll. RIBBON CHANGE * Change ribbon cartridge after each 5 rolls of paper - only change with no paper in printer. Remove old ribbon by pushing the end marked 'push' until the other end disengages, and remove. Turn button on new cartridge in direction indicated until ribbon is taut. Place cartridge straight on printer, turning the button until it engages. Ensure ribbon runs freely in the printer slot and then fit new paper roll.
