INTRODUCTION The timer can be used manually, or automatically with one or two infra-red gates. A gate memory allows correct timing even if the start or finish gate is not switched on when the competitor passes. An explanation of all the controls is given overleaf. The bottom feet may be folded out to tilt the timer and give a better viewing angle. OPERATION Connect timer to 12 volt battery or mains power unit and switch on. Set up gates as described below. Press zero, then switch the gate selector to start (left) as the competitor approaches the start line. Switch to off (centre) when the timer has started. Switch to finish (right) as the competitor approaches the finish line. GATES Attach heads and reflectors to tripods and set at each side of start and finish lines (max. distance of head from reflector is 15 metres, min. is 5 metres). Push tripods into ground slightly, tighten leg locking-nuts to ensure that tripods are firm and point the reflector towards the head. Connect heads to gate sockets on timer. The red lamps on the heads light up to show that they are connected. Loosen head screws and align the head with the reflector - the red lamp will go out to show correct alignment. Tighten all the screws and check the head is still aligned. The head must be carefully aligned - reflector position is not critical. A single gate can be used for start and finish. In this case plug it into the start socket on the timer. Only the start gate 'beam' lamp will operate, but the gate selector switch is used as if there were two gates. NOTE - If there is difficulty in aligning, ensure reflector and head lenses are clean and dry. Place head and reflector closer together. Although separation may be up to 15 metres, heavy rain may impair operation and the distance should be reduced to 10 metres or so. Standing in front of the beam, close to the head, may not appear to interrupt it - this is normal since at close range the beam responds to movement, and should operate correctly in actual use. CONNECTIONS At the back of the timer are sockets for a 12 volt battery, optional mains adapter, public display, and connectors for one or two gates. WARNING External battery must not exceed 14 volts. Although the heads are designed for outdoor use, the timer is not, and must not get wet. If necessary protect it with a polythene bag. CONTROLS START and STOP These buttons can be used at any time for manual operation. ZERO Sets the timer to zero. Operates only if the timer is stopped. With automatic timing it is not necessary to zero the timer since this is done automatically when the start gate operates. Holding the button down for about four seconds tests the display, which will then alternate between 888.888 and blank. This button is also used to check the memory setting as described below. GATE SWITCH This has three positions. Pressing the switch to the left enables the start gate and lights a red warning lamp. The centre position disables both the start and finish gates. Pressing the switch to the right enables the finish gate and lights another red warning lamp. BEAM LAMPS The red 'beam' lamps go out to show that the gates are aligned, and come on when the beam is interrupted. During single gate operation the finish beam lamp remains on continuously. MEMORY/RECALL The timer is designed to give a correct time even if a competitor passes the start or finish with the gate accidentally switched off. In these circumstances a buzzer will sound for 5 seconds. If, during this time, the memory/recall button is pressed, the timer will start from the time the start gate was passed, or will display the time when the finish gate was passed, as appropriate. If this is not required, do nothing - at the end of the 5 seconds the buzzer will stop. This memory facility may be switched off if not required. Pressing this button when the buzzer is not sounding will display the previous competitor’s time. Current timing and the public display are not affected by this. Holding down this button when the timer is zeroed and then pressing the zero button causes the display to show if the memory facility is currently on or off. Continuing to hold down both buttons for about 2 seconds changes the setting from on to off and vice versa. BUZZER The buzzer sounds a short warning whenever one of the buttons is pressed and performs a function (but not, for example, if the stop button is pressed with the timer stopped). A longer note sounds note whenever the active gate beam is broken. A 5 second note sounds during the gate memory period. A tick sounds whenever the timer is running. Power consumption is so low that the timer does not need to be switched off. timing C420 timer Instructions Redesdale Limited 29 Clarendon Road London W5 1AA tel/fax: 020 8810 6908 email: eg@egtiming.co.uk EMBED MSDraw.1.01 Registered in England and Wales number 4472738.
